How To Avoid Isolation When Working From Home
Today we are going to talk about how to avoid Isolation when working from home. Working from home is very good in many ways and especially when you are running your own business, you can just decide your own working hours and the best thing is that you don’t have to drive to work and deal with those drivers who seem to have something against you and they are always trying to get you fired.
You know the ones I mean, the ones who drive so slowly when they are in front of you just so that the traffic light can turn red when it’s your turn to go and then you end up being late for work, oh or maybe you need to catch a bus or a train to work and things usually don’t go so well and you feel like the universe is out to get you lol 🙂
As good as working from home can be, and research shows that the number of people working from home is increasing day by day, this is because of the fact that more things can now be done online, and also it’s easier these days to start your own online business than it was a few years back.
There is a bad side of working from home and one of the bad side is the loneliness and the isolation that comes with working from home. you have no one to have those small talks with by the water cooler or by the coffee machine, and you can not share those crazy jokes that you used to share with your colleagues.
And if you are a lady, you have no one to share the latest gossip with or to complain to about your kids or about your partner, you know women are always talking about their partners, oops sorry ladies there I go again with my big mouth 🙂
So let’s see how to avoid isolation when working from home. The first thing you need to realize is that you are not under house arrest, so even though the concept is that you are working from home, this does not necessarily mean that you have to lock yourself in the house every day. Working online gives you the freedom and the ability to work from anywhere, so you need to set aside some days when you will maybe do your work from a coffee shop, or any other place that you like.
You need to have human contact, so I say, maybe do your research at home because you really need to concentrate when you are researching for like lets say an article or a review that you need to write, so do all that and take some notes, and then when it’s time to write the article go to your favorite coffee shop, order a cup of your favorite coffee, or if you are like me order a cup of sweet tea.
And then get on with your writing, Actually, you will feel very motivated when you change your working environment. If you like going to the park then, of course, grab your snack and a drink and go and do your writing where you can watch other humans going about their business. and then depending on your working hours, you can call a friend when you are done and the two of you can go grab a bite to eat and catch up.
Don’t forget to socialize And I mean in and out of Social Media
People who work from home and especially online entrepreneurs, they bury themselves in their work that sometimes they don’t even realize which day of the week it is and especially those who are living on their own. If you have kids or a partner who you live with, then you will be reminded of things that should be taken care of apart from your business.
Like the partner will firmly but politely( OK maybe not so politely lol) remind you that you haven’t had your shower yet, or you haven’t taken out the trash, or your beard needs to be attended to I don’t know I think you get my point 🙂
But when you live alone, it’s very easy to get lost in your work and isolate yourself from the world outside of your computer, and it’s easy to let yourself go and this is not healthy at all, human beings are social beings, I don’t care if you think you are not sociable, oh what did you say? Did you say that you have a dog? well, that is good but you need to talk to your fellow human beings.
Take Your Dog For A Walk
A Dog is good to have and actually it helps in making sure you live the house because you need to take the dog for a walk, what? you have hired someone to take your dog for walks? I am sorry to the person you have hired but you need to take your own dog for a walk, it’s good for you and it’s good for the dog too, he/she ( the dog) needs to spend some time with you.
Its good that you are spending lots of time building your business, but you also need to have social life, you need to meet up with your friends and have some fun, go bowling, or play some baskets ball with your friends or swimming whatever activity that makes you happy. And also it’s good to keep in touch with friends on social media, just don’t do it during your work hours.
If you are a woman have some spa appointments with your girlfriends and catch up and have some fun, don’t lock yourself in the house and let life pass you by, that’s why in my previous article I mentioned time management because you need to have a definite time when you close your office.
And if you close at six, put your computer away and call some friends and arrange to meet up for pizza or for salad or whatever, I don’t know your eating style, just make sure you spend time with people and talk about other things away from the business.
Locking yourself in the house for long periods of time can cause many issues as far as your mental and physical health is concerned, people who spend days indoors by themselves, are prone to fall into depression and other health issues because they don’t talk about things that could be troubling them, and also because they don’t get some sun. If you have something on your mind, don’t use your business as an escape.
Talk to someone, get out and get some sun and you will feel better, that’s why I mentioned going to the park, the sun and the fresh air can work wonders, you will be surprised at how energized you will feel after spending sometime surrounded by trees and breathing in some fresh air plus the sun will do good to your bones and your health at large
Isolation when working from home is becoming very common, and in these days when people are spending lots of time on their devices, it’s very easy to get isolated, spending time on social media alone, does not pass as socializing, you need to interact with people and have a real-time conversation.
And before I close this article I have to mention that, when you close your office, then you need to stop doing work related things on your phone, as a matter of fact, I would recommend that you and your friends agree to put your phones away and just talk to each other.
I find it very sad when people meet up at lets say a coffee shop, and then they don’t talk to each other because they are on their devices doing other things, I ask myself, why did you meet up then, if you can’t put your phones away and talk to one another, sometimes people are even on a date and they are on their phones, it’s not even funny anymore.
When I meet someone, I usually put my phone in my handbag and just pay attention to that person, and I expect the same. Put the phones away, don’t even leave them on the table, put them away and hold a conversation with each other.
