One of the challenges you will face when you are working from home is staying healthy and in this article, I am going to show you how to stay healthy while working from home by sharing 5 tips on how to stay healthy while working from home.

When you are working in an office setting where you are working with other people, you might be embarrassed by going into the snack box too many times so this could help in limiting the amount of snacks that you take.

But when you are working from home, it is very easy for you do Fridge runs and there is no one to see just how much snacking you are doing so you might find yourself having too many snacks and this is not good for you especially if you are snacking on things like cookies, chocolates, chips and those kinds of things.

When working from home, you need to decide how many snacks you are going to have a day and you need to stick to that plan, and also you need to make sure that the kind of snacks you are having is healthy and beneficial to your body, for example, a bowl of fruit salad is a nice snack.

Before you start working, prepare your snacks and also plan your work in a way that you will have two snack breaks where you take few minutes break to have a snack and a drink, because snacking while you work is not a good idea because you will lose track of how much you are eating.

So I say, prepare your let’s say a bowl of fruits, and a serving of mixed nuts like almonds, peanuts or the kinds of nuts that you like, for me I think these kinds of snacks are good and they give you energy too.

If you chop half an apple, half a banana, and some berries like strawberries or blueberries, that will be a very healthy snack. Drink lots of water, drinking water is very good for you, if you find plain water boring, try adding a slice of lemon, and instead of still water, you can try the carbonated water, which will feel nice in your mouth when you drink it.

I actually find it easier to drink water while working because your mind is occupied by your work so you really don’t think much about the water being boring, and before you know it, you have drunk your water requirement for the day, the trick is to have a large glass that way you won’t have to keep running out.

When you are working, and having a sip of water every few minutes, you will find that you will not get so hungry and this means that you will minimize the amount of snacks you take during the day.

I actually read an article in a health magazine that said our brains can sometimes confuse thirst with hunger and the article suggested that when you feel hungry, you should actually drink a glass of water and then wait for 30 minutes to see if you are really hungry.

OK, I have to admit that when I feel hungry the last thing I want in my mouth is water, my brain is usually screaming food now! lol 🙂 but if you can, try that trick of drinking water first before going for that sandwich.

working from home means sitting long hours in front of a computer, and if you are running your own business, it means you are doing something you love and it’s very easy to lose track of time and just keep working. And this is why you need to have a working plan where you plan your working hours.

Because as much as you enjoy working and running your business, you also have to set aside some time to do some exercise so your body can stay in shape, and you can stay healthy and live long to enjoy all that money you are making in your business 🙂

So I say either get a gym membership and make sure you go to the gym without cheating or create your own workout routine and again don’t cheat, I have a hula hoop routine that I do 3 times a week, I love hula hooping because it’s fun and I do get some workout especially since my hula hoop is the kind that is designed for fitness, I got it from Amazon.

I also go for walks which I also enjoy because I love nature.

Eat Healthy And No Skipping Meals

Make sure you eat healthily, don’t eat too many sugary things, remember that since you are spending many long hours sitting in front of your computer, you are not burning many calories, so try to lower your calorie intake that way you will not put on weight, I find making sure I have a serving of salad with my meal, helps in lowering the calories.

Do not get in habit of skipping meals, have a healthy breakfast every day, skipping breakfast is not a good idea, by giving your body the fuel it needs to face the day, you will find that you will work more efficiently and when lunch comes you won’t be so hungry which means you won’t eat a lot.

Depending on what time you usually have your lunch, you might find you just need a small sandwich and you are good to go, and as we mentioned earlier, if you have been having your snack and drinking your water, you really won’t be that hungry.

If the gap between your lunch and dinner is wide, then I say, save most of your daily snacks for the afternoon, that way you won’t be too hungry at dinner time. The biggest mistake people make when it comes to food is letting themselves get so hungry, that when they finally sit to eat, they can’t control themselves because they are just too hungry.

Don’t Sit For Too Many Hours Without Moving Around

Remember not to sit for too long without moving, I know when you get an idea, you can forget everything and just sit for even 4 hours without even going to the bathroom 🙂 and then when you try to move, after you have finished what you were doing, you find your legs have gone numb.

Trust me I know what I am talking about because I have done this, I remember a time when I sat for a long time because I had this idea that I was working on, so when I finally tried to stand up, my legs refused to comply and I had to sit back down and try again slowly.

Remember to take a few breaks and move around a bit to keep the blood circulation going. also, while working, make sure to assume the correct sitting position and posture, don’t hatch your back as this could cause some problems especially when done for long periods of time.

Always make sure that your feet are on the floor and your back is straight, if you feel some tension on your shoulders, do some stretching or get up and move around a bit while stretching.

Go To Sleep At The Same Time Every Night

when working from home, you will be tempted to bring your laptop to bed, this is a very bad idea when you are done with work, you need to stop working, and that is why it is very important to have an office area that is away from your bedroom. don’t have a work desk in your bedroom because you will end up working when you should be sleeping.

Time to sleep should be just that, make sure you go to bed at the same time every night, this will teach your body when it’s time to relax and sleep, put your phone away and just sleep, if you like reading, read a few chapters of a book before sleeping, read something that is not work-related, and make sure it’s a paper book that you are reading because sometimes reading from a device can keep you from falling asleep.

If you would rather listen to music, then put on your favorite music on at a low volume and let yourself drift off to the la la land 🙂 make your sleeping area pleasant and welcoming, always make your bed after waking up, leaving your bed unmade, can make you feel like you don’t want to sleep, always make your bed.

Keep the lighting of your bedroom dimmed and warm, the daylight bulbs are not good for the bedroom because that kind of light will not let your brain relax, and this will make it hard for you to fall asleep.


Those are my 5 tips for staying healthy when working from home, I think when working from home you really have to be very disciplined about many things and especially your health and that is why I decided to write this article to help you stay healthy.

    Thanks a lot for those wonderful tips on working from home. For me the biggest mistake I make is to carry the laptop to the bedroom and continue working till almost morning, then the following day I usually feel exhausted and sleepy, then I do the same thing again and again. How can I break from this? Then the hardest for me would be to put up a specific time to sleep. I don’t know how I could follow that but I’ll try! Snacking comes 3rd as I will not have much trouble there. However, skipping breakfast is also a challenge I have. 

    I sure need to improve a lot of things!

    1. Hi Boniface, definitely you need to stop taking your laptop to bed with you, that is a bad idea, that’s why I said, working hours are working hours and then when you close the office, you are done for that day.

      Setting up a sleeping time is a good idea and you have to follow that routine and then your mind will get used to the routine and you will find that when its time to sleep you will feel sleepy.

      As for skipping breakfast that is very bad for you, how can you expect your body to accomplish the things you need to do during the day if you don’t give it the fuel it needs.

      You need to start the day the right way and that is by having a healthy breakfast.

  2. Very informative post. I quite enjoyed it. I myself am a blogger and I spend a lot of time on my computer doing different things. It is very important to pay attention what we eat, how we sleep and the physical aspect of bodies. Spending hours in front of your computer is not healthy and having balanced diet with good sleep and physical activity will ensure we are staying as healthy as possible.
