Shiny object syndrome is described as a disease of distraction and inability to focus or commit to one thing, this kind of syndrome affects a lot of affiliate marketers especially those who are in the starting phase of their business. It’s the urge to follow the next new thing or the next new course that promises you millions at the end of the course, today I am going to give you tips on how to avoid shiny object syndrome in affiliate marketing.

You Need To Find One Thing That Works And Stick To It

Because the shiny object syndrome is very common in people who are just starting to learn about affiliate marketing, in order for you to avoid this syndrome you need to find a course that will teach you affiliate marketing and you need to stick to it.

The biggest mistake the beginners make is, they sign up to many affiliate marketing training courses at the same time and what this does is it leads to more confusion and more distraction. The problem of following two or three courses at the same time is that each Guru has a different strategy so you will get confused because one Guru will tell you one thing, and then the other will tell you the opposite.

Believe me, I have made this mistake in the past and I can tell you for a fact, you will not be able to learn affiliate marketing this way. The best thing is to spend time and do your research and then find a training program, check it out and see if it’s the kind of program you would like to follow and learn how to build your online business.

Another mistake affiliates make, is trying to do too many things at the same time, sort of like casting your net all over and hoping somehow you will catch something, for example, you might see someone doing something on YouTube and you decide you want to do that too (Shiny object) so you abandon what you’ve been doing and you start doing something new.

Then you find, that was not such a good idea so you go searching for yet another thing (shiny object two) while you are doing all this, you are probably spending money and spending a lot of time and energy and you are probably not getting anywhere.

Distraction Will Cost You Money And Lots Of Time

OK, lets face it, when you are first starting, you will be doing a lot of research and finding out what the other affiliates are doing and what is working for them, but if you decide to try every single thing you find on the internet that has worked for someone else, then you are going to waste lots of money and time.

Have you been to YouTube and checked out all the so-called Gurus ( I know I have) they make a video, give you a few tips that will not take you anywhere and then they promise if you watch until the end of the video they are going to share a secret that will blow your mind, a secret that will earn you millions.

And like a good student that you are, you sit and watch the video until the end, which will take like 30 minutes, and then at the end, you are now anticipating the secret that will change your life, a secret that could potentially make your dream of slumming the door of your boss’s office as you tell him/her that he can take that job and…well, you get my point, come true.

The secret turns out it’s a course that you have to sign up for, which will cost you… you guessed it, more time and…wait for it….. a few hundred dollars. So you have given the Guru (no matter how successful I get, I will never use that term to describe myself I promise) who claims to have made millions on the internet watch time for their YouTube Channel which means you have helped him earn money with Google ads, and what have you gained?

I can tell you what you have not gained, you have not gained a blog post for your website, you have not gained a Pinterest pin for your Pinterest account which you could have created on Canva.com for free and pinned on Pinterest which in return would have brought free organic traffic to your website.

And do you know what else you haven’t gained while you were helping the Guru get his ad commission on YouTube? You haven’t gained any likes for your latest post which you could have been sharing on your social media accounts. And you most definitely haven’t gained any new skill. As a matter of fact, you are still thirsty for knowledge.

The Guru Will Probably Leave You With More Questions

One thing I noticed with YouTube, they will suggest videos based on your search and what this means is that you could end up watching lots of videos because each video promises more answers, (shiny object chase continues) you could end up watching YouTube videos for hours, I know this because I have done it and I want to save you from spiraling out of control.

I remember one Saturday afternoon, I searched on YouTube how to create YouTube channel art, and let’s just say, I was watching videos for hours and they were not all about creating YouTube channel art. The point I am trying to make here is, when you are starting in Affiliate marketing, try to avoid distractions.

Focus on creating content for your website, focus on doing keyword research that way you are prepared for your blog posts and you can create SEO targeted content, when you are not working on your website, then use that time to promote your content on social media.

But How Can I Find What I am Looking For?

I know now you are asking well, so what I am I supposed to do, how I am I supposed to find that golden training that will teach me all I need to know about affiliate marketing? The truth of the matter is you have to enroll in training, you need to find an Affiliate training program that works for you and meets your needs and you need to follow it.

There are many affiliate marketing training out there and you can find one that you like, just make sure that it’s not a stagnant kind of training that will leave you stranded when you move on from beginner to a more knowledgeable affiliate Marketer.

See the problem you will face when you buy the one time kind of training, is that once you graduate from beginner to a more advanced affiliate, you will either have to spend more money and buy the next level of training, or if you enroll on the kinds of training program that operate with levels, then you will be working for those programs.

Let me elaborate on that, what I mean is, if you join a training program that requires you to upgrade to a higher level in order for you to access the next level of the training, then you are trapped, and you really don’t want to be trapped because that’s how people lose thousands of dollars in attempts to learn affiliate marketing.

You need to find an affiliate training program that has only one level of membership and once you enroll, you have access to the program and all the training including the new and live classes, that’s what you need to find, you need to find the kind of training program that, will not demand you pay more when you start making more money with your website.

Because there are some programs out there that are designed to take a portion of your earning, the more you earn the more they take from you. The whole point of starting an online business is to have financial freedom and to be your own boss, so let me ask you this one question, how can you truly say that you are your own boss if the more money you earn the more is being taken from you?

The Answer Is Simple, You Are Still Enslaved

I know enslaved is such a strong word but, the truth is, most people who are researching how to start in affiliate marketing, are people who are stuck in a job they don’t like but have to work because the bills need to be paid, and so they feel trapped and they are desperately looking for a way out, before they suffocate.

So that is why you need to make sure that the training program you join will not feel like you escaped from frying a pan right into the fire.

The search of the next new and exciting thing (shiny object) could destroy your affiliate marketing business even before it’s off the ground so again I say, find what you love to do or what you are passionate about ( niche) find a training program that will work for you and help you turn your passion into an income, and start working on your business.

That is the only way to go about it, there will always be a new shiny object and as my grandfather used to say, if you are searching for a wife and keep looking for the most beautiful woman, then you will never find a wife, because there will always be a more beautiful woman than the previous one.
