Today I want to take time and answer this question because I have been asked many times how much does it cost to build your own website? The truth is, depending on the kind of website you are building money wise it doesn’t cost much. Let’s take a look, if you register a.com domain, that will cost you roughly $15 a year, then the hosting for a simple website the hosting range anywhere between $4 to $29 per month.

But what does all this mean?

Before we go any further, let me explain to you what a domain is and what web hosting is, a domain is like your own space on the internet, for example, my letsworkinpjs.com is my own space which means if someone else tries to find the same exact domain, they will not be able to find it because I own it.

Which means, when you purchase your own domain, you own it as long as you continue to renew the registration every year, and now Let’s talk about hosting, what is web hosting? hosting is where your website lives if you have a domain but no hosting, no one will be able to find your website.

You need web hosting in order for people to find you on the internet, the good thing is that hosting is not costly, as we have mentioned, it could be anywhere between $4 to $29 a month, Blue Host is charging $3.95 per month, I think that is quite reasonable, so for domain and hosting, you are not really going to spend much money.

Yet you have an opportunity to make lots of money with your own website

depending on the reasons why you want to build your own website, if you intend to make money with your website, for example, if you want to enter into affiliate marketing or even multi-level marketing, you need your own domain and a self-hosted website.

But if you just want to have a blog, where you share your ideas with the world, then you can have a free website where you don’t own the domain and you don’t have it hosted, you can join platforms like Wix, Weebly, Blogger, Tumblr or even wordpress.com.

Those are platforms where you can create a free blog, and you can share your content with the world, the only problem with using a free blog site, is that you are not in control of your blog and you can’t install plugins for Let’s say SEO and you will find difficulties if you decide to promote a product for a commission.

Basically, it will be difficult to monetize your blog if you are using a free blog site especially if you want to depend on free traffic, but if you have money to spend on paid traffic, then you will get traffic. But that doesn’t even make sense, why pay money to get traffic and yet not get your own self hosted website?

If you can’t tell, I am not very fond of the idea of building an online business on a shaky foundation, because Let’s be honest, by building your business on a free blog site, you are not in control and anything can happen, what if you wake up tomorrow and your content is deleted or you get blocked from accessing your blog?

It was just yesterday I was reading about a blogger who had her Pinterest account deactivated, luckily she had her own self hosted blog and other social media pages, although there was a happy ending and she was able to get her Pinterest account back after a while, she was losing money because she had affiliate pins that she was promoting on Pinterest and she had subscriptions like Tailwind which she got purposely for Pinterest.

Are you seeing where I am going with this?

If you are going to spend money, on Let’s say ads or paid traffic, why not bring that traffic to your own website and help grow your own business, where you have control and you are not worried that someone will block your links or delete your content? I think the best way to start an online business whether you are starting a website to promote your own products or other people’s products, is to have your own website.
